In this start-to-finish restoration project, the existing exterior doors of a 1895 Victorian home needed to be replaced. One major challenge was that the existing door opening was not at all plumb or level, but needed to look completely level when finished. With custom design work, we were able to achieve this.

The joinery on the diamond sash bar layout on the exterior doors was particularly involved when carried out on curved work, but ultimately came out very nicely. 

SEATTLE, WA

I designed and created a replacement curved sliding door for the restoration of this Seattle Home designed by architect Wendell Lovett.

NEW YORK, NY

The project here was to design, build and install a curved door for a bathroom using architectural veneers on a flush door core in continuance with the wall veneers. 

The large (44” x 92”) single panel door required concealed hinges and needed to fit into a matched panel plan for the entire door envelope and partition .

NEW YORK, NY

Two pocket doors and one swing door for an oval reception room. Custom elliptical tracks were constructed with stainless steel. The pocket door openings curve were near the tight end of the oval. A method needed to be devised to have the pocket doors “flatten” when they were pushed into the pocket. This was effected by splitting the center stile and installing a row of concealed hinges.

NEW YORK, NY

In this project, I designed and built two curved pocket doors, including determine the profile and elevation of the entire door/wall envelope for a residence off Central Park in New York City. As with all door envelope projects the scope is much more broad than a simple door installation.

An interesting aspect of this project is the door servicing method: the doors are removed for servicing by first removing a pilaster in the hall which is positioned in line with the track and held in place with spring loaded locating pins. Once removed the doors can be brought out of their respective pockets for servicing.

SEA BRIGHT, NJ

For this project, I designed and built a set of curved doors for a residence in Sea Bright, NJ. This project is unique in that I was hired after initial attempts at building the doors by another firm were unsuccessful. The project was at risk of falling behind deadline, so I was brought in to quickly design and build the doors.

The raised panels were done in 1/8” layers from laser cut panels that were bonded and smoothed to the required raised profile. All the details in my design needed to match the flat millwork. Although the timeline was tight, the contractor and I were able to partner closely and deliver quickly.

ASPEN, CO

This project called for a set of automated curved pocket doors for a residence in Aspen, CO. I designed the doors, developed the door envelope, header, head track, floor guide system, and installed the door automation system - a Doors in Motion Series 500 with pressure mat motion sensors.

This project was part of a renovation. As such, it had to be fitted into the existing curved wall and elevation. A number of people who knew the before and saw the after commented on how artfully this work was carried out.

WASHINGTON, DC

Concealed curved door for Courthouse (Architect: Michael Graves). I created the prototype curved door for the Prettyman Courthouse. A steel door frame and special pre-finished, fire-rated board with a curly maple veneer face were supplied to me for this purpose. With the successful execution established my methods were used in the construction of the other curved doors in the project.

THOMPSON ISLAND

A very large (10'x 14’) curved door was needed for a unique round horse barn on the Hudson River's Thompson Island. The door also needed a window that would align perfectly with another window on the barn - allowing light to enter the barn regardless of whether the door was in the open or closed position.

The work was divided into frame and skins. All the curved spars were made in the shop, dry assembled with the perimeter frame and disassembled for delivery to the job site.

SANTA MONICA, CA

The project called for the complete refitting of a large interior to house the Shell Hydrogen Learning Center and refueling station. The plan had walls that housed kiosks explaining hydrogen fuel automobiles, a curved pocket door and a large moveable partition that created an expandable meeting space.
